You'll often hear of women creating a capsule wardrobe whether it be to simply their lives or reduce consumption. For some this can often be off putting, the idea of limiting your wardrobe to a set amount of pieces, or halting any retail therapy. So as we start a new year with sincere intentions and a clear conscious of climate change, here are a few basic tips to help you get started with curating your own capsule wardrobe.
1. EFFORTLESS MEANS EFFORT.
1. EFFORTLESS MEANS EFFORT.
The purpose of a capsule wardrobe is about saving time and simplifying a decision process in your life while ensuring that you pull off that effortless yet elevated style. Time is one of our most valued commodities in life and the hours you invest in this will both enjoyable but have a satisfying outcome.
2. STAY TRUE TO YOU.
There are a lot of "capsule" wardrobe recommendations out there and you'll see a common theme which sticks to very classic cult trends. However, you don't need to change your style just to build a capsule wardrobe. The most important it to include the pieces you already have and love. So don't think that patterns or bright colours are not permitted, it's purely personal.
3. PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE.
We're all guilty of throwing out and decluttering to the extreme and in a world which desires instant gratification patience is often forgotten. Before you start building a capsule wardrobe it is important that you really go through everything in your wardrobe and start sorting what you truly love. I'm embarrassed to admit I too am guilty of looking through and finding things I have forgotten about. Once you have a clearer overview of what you already have then it will be easier to manage your future consumption.
4. FORGET THE NUMBERS
For those free spirited souls (like myself) who don't like the idea of being held accountable to numbers and restrictions it's important that your "capsule" wardrobe grows with you. A misconception here is that there are 30 items and you can ONLY wear those. Our style is forever evolving and changing and you cannot limit that. As long as you are considerate with your consumption that is the most important.
5. BUILD KEY SIGNATURE LOOKS
I'm not a planner when it comes to my daily outfit and it isn't necessary. Instead you can build key signature looks that you continually swap with certain pieces. It is incredibly simple. For example a key look of mine is ballet flats, straight leg denim, a silk tee and a cashmere sweater. As I have multiple colours and styles of each of these pieces I can easily create every day a different look. Add a coat, a blazer and switch up my handbag. Yet the style remains consistent and a key signature look you can easy put together daily.
